Working backwards from your permit expiry date

The date printed on your residence title is the fixed point; the preparation around it is not. Appointment systems and submission methods differ across German cities, so begin with the website of the authority responsible for your registered address.

Eight to twelve weeks before

Check passport validity, locate your electronic residence title and supplementary sheet, and read the current local renewal procedure. Note whether the authority accepts an online application, email submission, or only appointment requests.

Four to eight weeks before

Request employer forms and recent confirmation from HR. Gather payslips and health-insurance evidence. If your role, salary, employer, or hours changed, do not hide the difference—identify it and obtain advice suited to the change.

Keep evidence of timely contact

Save submission confirmations and correspondence. If you cannot obtain an appointment before expiry, the legal effect depends on the circumstances and timing of your application. Seek qualified legal advice when continued residence or work authorization is uncertain.
